What is speech and language therapy?

"Speech"

Within a context of 'speech and language therapy', "speech" is the clarity or pronunciation of words. Sometimes this is to do with the physical formation of sounds (articulation) where a person needs to learn how to say a sound or modify how they say a sound, e.g. a lisp. Sometimes a person can form a sound but they use it incorrectly in words. For example, saying "dod" for "dog".

"Language" - Spoken (oral) and Written (literacy)

This is a huge area! Consider what you need to have a conversation: vocabulary (words and concepts), sentence structure, grammatical markers, ability to sequence ideas into a message... Now consider what you need to understand someone's message: tone of voice (e.g. telling a joke or being sarcastic), body language, facial expression, multiple meanings of different words within a given context...

With the fundamentals of spoken language in place, now these skills can be transferred to written language!

"Therapy"

Involves training, coaching, practising and empowering individuals to learn, make improvements. establish alternative ways to change areas of need. For young children this often involves fun and interactive games. Regardless of your age, therapy is encouraging, uplifting and supportive. Therapists meet you where you are, teach new skills in a safe, confidential and professional environment.
